  Opportunities for career enhancement

For those who are already working within local government there are a number of opportunities for your to enhance your career and grow your knowledge.

There are a number of scholarships and exchanges available to local government staff as well as sector focused training events.  To learn more about any of these options click the links below: 


Overseas Manager Exchange Programme

This Programme is one of a range of SOLGM initiatives that provide leadership and development opportunities specifically tailored to the local government environment. The Programme is designed to provide local government managers with an opportunity to focus on their management development and career in Local Government through a short exchange with a partner manager in another country.
The 2015/16 Programme offers three exchanges to the United States, British Columbia and New South Wales in Australia. Each exchange involves a hosted visit to the destination country and hosting a reciprocal visitor from that country during the time period of the 2015 SOLGM Annual Summit. The SOLGM Annual Summit is being held this year in Palmerston North from the 9th to the 11th of November.
The exchange visit to the overseas host country is timed around the Annual Conference of the host association.

Leadership Scholarship

The Skills Organisation Melbourne Business School Leading for Strategic Success Programme


The Leading for Strategic Success programme is the prestigious Melbourne Business School’s most senior leadership programme and replaces the programme that previous Scholarship recipients have attended. The Melbourne Business School holds AACSB and EFMD (EQUIS) accreditation, and their programmes are ranked among the best in the world by the Financial Times, The Economist, Bloomberg Business Week and AFR Boss magazine.

Australasian Management Challenge

The Australasian Management Challenge is a sophisticated development programme specially designed to enhance leadership and management skills of managers and staff in local government.  This team-based learning and development programme is delivered in New Zealand and in Australia.  

This is not just a one day training.

Councils can use the Management Challenge to achieve any strategic outcomes on professional development of staff or succession programme.

Who Should Enter 

All council organisations.   Come up with a team of 5-6 members plus appoint a team mentor.  

The team members can be:

  • Any council staff who you have identified as having a potential to be a leader or manager in your organisation
  • Any up and coming managers or emerging leaders in your organisation
